HOUSING PROJECT WORTH R0, 5 BILLION APPROVED FOR EASTERN CAPE

The MEC for Housing and Local Government, Mr. Gugile Nkwinti has, in consultation with the Provincial Housing Development Board (PHDB)
embarked on a programme to accelerate housing delivery in the province.

During a strategic prioritisation session with the PHDB and key departmental officials MEC Nkwinti approved the allocation of funds to
various projects which had been approved subject to availability of funds. The funds will be released from the 2000/1 housing budget.

Projects in various regions have benefited from this allocation. The provincial regions that have benefited are:
 Western Region (21 Projects with a value of R185, 397 194), Central Region (12 Projects amounting to R58, 810 050), Northern Region (8
Projects in the amount of R75, 539 870), Eastern Region (2 Projects amounting to R27, 712 000) and East Griqualand Region (8 Projects in
the amounting of R74, 078 000).

The total amount allocated to these projects is therefore R421 537 114. The allocation of funds will be in accordance with various
milestones to be achieved within a two-year period.

An amount of R102 511 994 has been reserved for these projects during the 2000/1 financial year with the balance to be utilised in the
following financial year.

Letters of notification have already been written to the affected developers where they have been requested to submit revised proposals in
accordance with the current provincial policy measures i.e. job creation, skills transfer and quality product (specifications have been
provided).

MEC Nkwinti has, however emphasised a strict project management and monitoring process to ensure that developers adhere to their cash flow
projections.

Drastic measures will be taken on developers with slow or non-moving projects to ensure that resources are not hogged in these poorly
performing projects at the expense of new projects.
